Off Campus Housing
If you are starting an internship that does not provide housing, chances are that you are looking for a place to live. Living off campus is an alternative, and sometimes more affordable option, to living on campus. The following are resources that can help you find an apartment in New York City:
ForRent.com
A unique site that helps students plan to live around the different Universities located in New York. The site allows you to make broad searches in areas, and allows you to search specific prices as well.
NYC Neighborhood Map
Not sure where that apartment in Bed-Stuy is? Or if Vinegar Hill is closer to Manhattan that Boerum Hill? Check out the NYC Department of Planning's map. It lacks some of the newer - and not so new - slang, though (e.g. DuMBo, Hell's Kitchen, Helsea, Chelsea North, Meatpacking District, etc.).
NYC Neighborhoods: Real Estate Agents' Perspectives
Not all of the boroughs are represented, but you can find out a brief overview of neighborhoods in Manhattan and Brooklyn, including white collar:blue collar ratio, air quality, and average family/apt. size. Corcoran is one of the big 3 real estate firms in NYC - their statistics should be good, but watch the sales hype in the glowing descriptions.
NYC Subway Google Map Hack
This map combines the MTA Subway Map and the Path Map with a Google Map of NYC, so you can see which stops are closest to wherever you're going. If you zoom in far enough, you can also see where the different exits are at each station. This site is particularly useful for finding out that the apartment advertised as "5 minutes from the subway" is actually over a mile from the nearest stop. :-)
NYU Off-Campus Housing Guide
You can't access their listings until you have a NetID, but you can still view the useful information on this site.
New York Times Rental Classifieds
Tri-State (NY, NJ, CT) area listings. You made need to register (free).
Sublet.com Neighborhood Descriptions
Provides information on neighborhoods in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The site also includes apartment listings, but you have to pay to contact most of the landlords.
Village Voice Classifieds
Not as comprehensive as others, but could be useful. SoYouWanna.com claims the Voice's classifieds concentrates on apartments in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Dedicated hunters note: FIT says these listings are updated every Tuesday afternoon (the print version of the Voice is released Wednesdays).
